What is Recreation Therapy?
Recreation Therapy, also known as, Therapeutic Recreation, is a branch of healthcare that focuses on using recreational activities, leisure pursuits, and play to improve the physical, emotional, spiritual, cognitive, and social well-being of individuals. It’s about using enjoyable and purposeful activities to help people achieve their goals, whether it’s regaining independence, managing stress, improving physical health, or enhancing overall quality of life.
What does a Recreation Therapist do?
A Recreation Therapist (RT) uses purposeful and goal-orientated recreation and leisure interventions to increase a client’s wellbeing and quality of life. In other words, an RT provides thoughtful therapeutic recreation interventions and leisure experiences to restore leisure functioning, promoting psychosocial
health and recovery.
